Marc Solioz
Marc Solioz is full professor of biochemistry at the University of Bern. Born in Zurich, Solioz studied chemistry and engineering in Zurich. He moved to the United States, where he obtained his PhD in biochemistry at St. Louis University in 1975 studying gene transfer between photosynthetic bacteria. During his post-doctoral work at the University of Basel with Gottfried Schatz, he investigated the biogenesis of mitochondria and the role of the mitochondrial genome. For several years he was assistant and associate professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), where, together with Ernesto Carafoli, he studied membrane proteins and the electron transport chain. In 1989 he became professor of biochemistry at the University of Bern. With the discovery of the copper ATPase pump in 1992, Solioz’s attention shifted to copper, which has remained the focus of his studies to the present day.
